ANALYSIS OF NIRF2018 RANKINGS

A BIG CHURN

NIRF2018 Rankings saw a huge churn in the Top 100 List of Institutions across Categories. I am giving a macro-view on just 3 categories (Universities, Engineering College & Management Schools) to give you a perspective of the Churn that I am indicating.

NIRF2018 Rankings saw a huge churn in the Top 100 List of Institutions across Categories.
BIG CHURN

UNIVERSITY

Nearly Two-third ratio of the Top 100 Universities (63 in number) are Public which are either funded by Central or State Government. The balance 37 are Private Universities.

Only 5 Universities could RETAIN the Rank they earned in NIRF2017 in NIRF2018 as well (for example, if an University is Ranked No. 27 both in NIRF2017 and NIRF2018, I classify them as RETAINING their Rank).

38 Universities GAINED on their Position from NIRF2017 to NIRF2018 Ranks (Moving up on the Ranks) and 40 Universities LOST their Position from NIRF2017 to NIRF2018 Ranks (Moving down on the Ranks).

18 Universities got DROPPED OUT of the Top 100 Ranks in NIRF2018, which they secured in NIRF2017. This resulted in 18 new Universities gaining entry into NIRF2018 Rankings as NEW ENTRANTS. Out of these 18 new entrants, 6 were Agriculture Universities.

Note: 9 out of the Top 100 Universities are Agricultural Universities. As more and more Agriculture Universities participate in the future Rankings, this could emerge out as a new Category of Institutions.

ENGINEERING COLLEGES

Nearly Two-third ratio of the Top 100 Engineering Colleges (64 in number) are Public which are either funded by Central or State Government. The balance 36 are Private Engineering Colleges.

Only 11 Engineering Colleges could RETAIN the Rank they earned in NIRF2017 in NIRF2018 as well (for example, if an Institution is Ranked No. 27 both in NIRF2017 and NIRF2018, I classify them as RETAINING their Rank).

32 Engineering Colleges GAINED on their Position from NIRF2017 to NIRF2018 Ranks (Moving up on the Ranks) and 38 Engineering Colleges LOST their Position from NIRF2017 to NIRF2018 Ranks (Moving down on the Ranks).

19 Engineering Colleges got DROPPED OUT of the Top 100 Ranks in NIRF2018, which they secured in NIRF2017. This resulted in 19 new Engineering Colleges gaining entry into NIRF2018 Rankings as NEW ENTRANTS

Note: All this Churn happened side-by-side with the slide in the number of Institutions participating in the Engineering Colleges Category. There was a reduction of 101 Institutions in this Category from NIRF2017 (1008 Institutions) to NIRF2018 (907 Institutions).

MANAGEMENT SCHOOLS

Management Schools is the only category that saw a healthy ratio between Public & Private Institutions in the Top 50 Ranks, with a split of 27 Public Institutions and 23 Private Institutions (Management had only 50 Ranks Vs 100 Ranks in Universities and Engineering Colleges, owing to lesser number of Institutions participating in the Ranking exercise).

Only 7 Management Schools could RETAIN the Rank they earned in NIRF2017 in NIRF2018 as well (for example, if an Institution is Ranked No. 27 both in NIRF2017 and NIRF2018, I classify them as RETAINING their Rank).

6 Management Schools GAINED on their Position from NIRF2017 to NIRF2018 Ranks (Moving up on the Ranks) and 23 Management Schools LOST their Position from NIRF2017 to NIRF2018 Ranks (Moving down on the Ranks).

14 Management Schools got DROPPED OUT of the Top 100 Ranks in NIRF2018, which they secured in NIRF2017. This resulted in 14 new Management Schools gaining entry into NIRF2018 Rankings as NEW ENTRANTS

Note: All this Churn happened side-by-side with the slide in the number of Institutions participating in the Management Schools Category. There was a reduction of 55 Institutions in this Category from NIRF2017 (542 Institutions) to NIRF2018 (487 Institutions).
